Doughnuts - Sort Of

In my previous post, I wrote about Geneva's repeated failed attempts at producing a half decent doughnut. Of all the places that sell doughnuts here, only one is even worth trying, and not because their product tastes or feels like a real doughnut, not because anyone actually bothered to glaze it, but only because at least it meets one requirement: inside, it's actually soft. And while it takes more than that to make a doughnut, it's a whole lot more than anyone else can say about their attempts in this city.

So where does one get the round, soft pastry with a hole in the middle that isn't quite a doughnut but comes closer than anything else in Geneva? Migros. Yep, yep, the supermarket chain operates boulangeries throughout the city and if you go to the one in Balexert you can get yourself a Swiss sugar doughnut. You can also get donuts that have vanilla or chocolate icing on them but I would skip those altogether.

  1. The doughnut situation in Geneva IS dire. It seems like they're all manufactured at the same factory, set aside for about a month so they can get nice and stale, and then distributed to all the shops around town. I've never tried the doughnuts at Migros but it doesn't surprise me that they're the only ones doing a halfway decent job of it :)

    1. Hello howtocookabear and thank you for your comment! Haha, well even to enjoy the Migros ones properly, you have to lower your standards a little. But you know, I really do suspect there is essentially only one doughnut provider in Geneva... I have no idea who they are or how they go about doing what they do, but they should really reconsider their process. In any case, if you have a doughnut recipe, please feel free to share! :)

By the way, I checked out your blog and it's awesome - I can't wait to sit down and read all the posts. Didn't see any bear recipes which is a relief!

  2. I have never ventured to make doughnuts myself! But I have had my eye on this recipe for quite some time http://www.babbonyc.com/dolci-zippulas.html
I saw some promising looking doughnuts in an unlikely location recently, and now I can't remember where it was...It might have been a gas station? If I think of it I'll let you know!

    1. Great, thanks for sharing! Yes I've heard quite a bit about potato doughnuts, never tried making doughnuts myself either. Oddly enough, I too, am starting to realize that the only doughnuts worth eating in this city will be found in the unlikeliest of places. Never quite the real thing, but often not half bad! I recently had a pretty decent one in a tiny supermarket in Chambésy... who knew??
